Monday:T.L.W. begin CREATING A REPUBLIC 1776-1790 p. 198-204. Students will have practice using a time line and understanding events on the time line. What important book was published the year before the Continental Congress approved the Articles of Confederation? Which event of the 1780’s suggests that the u.S. was planning to expand westward? What event happened in Europe the same year the Articles of Confederation took effect? How many terms did George Washington serve as President?
Why did the state governments write constitutions? What were the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? What process did the Articles creat for admitting new states? Why did many Americans call for changes in the Articles? Know about the Land Ordinance of 1785. Know about the Northwest Ordinance and Shay’s Rebellion. Read text p. 200-204. Homework Section 1 Assessment p. 204 (1-6). 8.5.12,8.4.1, 8.4.2, 8.4.3.

Tuesday:T.L.W. identify the leading delegates to the Constitutional Colnvention. Explain the main differences between the two rival plans for the new Constitution. Describe the compromises the delegates had to reach before the Constitution could be signed. Text p. 206-210. Review homework from last night. Know the three branches of government. Homework: Tonight you might wish to listen to the election returns. Bring workbook to class tomorrow. 8.6.5, 8.4.8

Wednesday:T.L.W.Complete workbook pages for Sections 1 and 2 of Chapt. 7. Explain what American leaders learned from studying ancient Rome. Identify the tradions of freedom that Americans inherited from Great Britain and from their own colonial past. Explain how Enlightenment Ideas shaped the develpment of the Constitution. Tonight study for a quiz on 7- 1 and 2 sections. 8.4.3, 8.4.2,8.4.1

Thursday:T.L.W. recite the preamble to the U.S. Constitution. See text p. 223 the first paragraph after the Introduction. We the people. . . . Examine the parts to the U.S. Constitution p. 222. Note the notes to the side of the pages that explain what the document says. Complete quiz on Chapt. #7. 8.5.3,8.4.4

Friday: Celebrate Veterans’Day

Monday: T.L.W. continue reading the novel. Explain the novel projects that are due on Nov. 20th. Reminder: Book Report on Tues Nov. 21. Vocab. words for the week: bubonic plague, maladjusted, hovel, bellowed, incongruous, disheartened, pathetic, trespassing. How well do you know yourself? On a sheet of paper make two columns. In the left-hand column, list ways in which you think you are similar to John or Lorraine, or even Mr. Pignati in your thoughts, speech, and behavior. In the right-hand column list ways in which you are different. 8.1.7, 8.1.2, 8.1.10 8.1tpi 18.
Homework: Define and study vocab words for novel test on Thurs. On-going homework is reading your selected novel. Next week you will be told what you must have on the 21st.

Tuesday: T.L.W. complete Novel ORGANIZER to turn in for a grade tomorrow. Complete the Foreshadowing worksheet p. 35. 8.1.4,8.1.11,

Wednesday: T.L.W. examine choices and consequences found in the novel and point of view of various characters. wkst. 33 and 34. 8.1.18,

Thursday: T.L.W. complete the novel test for The Pigman. 8.1.14,8.1.24, 8.1.12

Friday: T.L.W. celebrate Vetrans’ Day! You might wish to work on your novel project this long weekend.. (See Below.)

I.
The Pigman- Art work

Create a collage that expresses an important idea from the novel. For example, Zindel often refers to characters’ eyes, to having fun, to guilt, or loss, or even pigs. You may collect pictures from magazines to cover a collage mounted on art poster board.

II.
The Pigman Word Study Assignment
Create a “Humor Dictionary” based on the novel. Define the various types of humor that you find in the novel and then give an example of when each was used in the novel.

III.
The Pigman- Art work

Illustrate a quotation from the novel that you find especially meaningful. Look toward the end of the novel for these. In your illustration use some kind of art poster and color.

What is the meaning of life?

Answer this question from the point of view of each of the following characters:

John-

John’s father-

John’s mother-

Lorraine-

Lorraine’s mother-

Mr. Pignati-

You-

Conclude with a paragraph telling how you have arrived at your life philosophy.

V.
The Pigman Motif Art /Writing Assignment

A motif is a repeated image that occurs over and over in the book. Zindel makes several references to:

baboons-

smiling faces-

pigs-

lying-

death-

Select a motif and find pictures of it in magazines and then write a short report indicating where each image appears in the novel and explain its significance in the book.

VI.
The Pigman Musical Assignment-

Find a song that each character in the book could relate to. Create a taped (CD) medley of the songs and play them for the class. Explain in writing why you chose each song for each character.
Turn in a copy of the music and lyrics along with the written explanation.

VII.
The Pigman Poetry Project

Select a major theme from the book and locate 4-6 poems on the theme. Compile them into a booklet with a cover that suggests the mood of the theme.

Some themes might be:
friendship, family, fun, love, loneliness/alienation, parents, loss, death, responsibility or any other theme that you “see” in the novel.
