Monday: T.L.W. continue with German and then begin the short story “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” by Ray Bradbury. Notice the figures of speech in the writing. A figure of speech often helps us see things in unusual ways. What does the word deserter mean? Historical fiction is set during a real historical era. It includes both historical characters and fictional characters. This story lets you see the civil war through the eyes of a young drummer boy. Skills lesson: Go over capitalizing and punctuating Titles. You may need this tomorrow on the state writing exam. Tuesday: T.L.W. discuss the State Writing Exam given during Advisory this morning. How did you do? Go over the vocabulary for the week: askew, benediction, resolute, tremor, grimace, preoccupation, impudent, curt, reiterated, gravity, remorse, inscription.
Read “The Deserter” text p. 587-597. Note the letter written by Abraham Lincoln. Homework: Making Meanings p. 598 Reading Check and 2-10 8.2.08,8.1.885,8.1.06
Wednesday: T.L.W.write an imaginary dialogue between the following characters from “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” or “The Desserter”. Your choice- 1) Joby and the general on the day of the Battle of Shiloh, 2)one of the Federal Registrar soldiers and Eb, 3) Jenny and Eb 4) Preseident Lincoln and his secretary John Hay. Remember dialogue has quotation marks around the words the characters say. Also there is an indention everytime the speaker changes. 8.81.09
Thursday: T.L.W. presentation of conversations that you wrote yesterday. Read:”The Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln text p. 623-625. Write a journal entry describing the experience at seeing the 20,000 who were at the dedication of the Gettysburg cemetary, mourning their friends and relatives who were recently killed at this field. Describe your reactions to the president’s speech. This goes in your writer’s notebook. Homework: using the internet or library, research a political leader who was assassinated, such as John F,Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, or Mohandas Ghandi. Write a poem or eulogy (speech prasing the person who has died) from the point of view of one of the person’s followers. 8.3.04e
Friday: T.L.W. read and interpret the poem “O Captain! My Captain!. Complete Making Meanings text p. 627 Reading Check and 2-8. Complete selection test on “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” and “The Deserter”. 8.1.08.9

Tuesday:T.L.W. complete Chapt. 13 test. Review vocabulary, important persons, timeline of events, and quizes. Reread the chapter if necessary and take notes to study. Look at all diagrams and maps for information. Some mistakes are made due to reader’s errors. Read the test carefully- don’t guess. Think! Use reading skills such as inferences, and putting information together. L1, M, D.
Wednesday: T.L.W.read and discuss the Time Line p. 406-407. Read Industry in the North p. 408-411. Complete section 1 questions p. 411 1-6. Read about the Telegraph on p. 412. Discuss how new inventions changed manufacturing and farming in the north. Identify the difficulties faced by the first railroads. Explain how railroads and clipper ships helped the northern economy.
